Theory 1: From China to Spain via Portugal This theory suggests that churros first originated in China, derived from a fried dough delicacy called "Youtiao". Portuguese explorers are believed to have brought this fried dough concept to Spain, where it was later developed into what we know as churros. The history of churros stands as a testament to the power of cultural exchange and culinary creativity. From a humble shepherd's snack, they have become a beloved dessert enjoyed and recognized by people all over the world. While the history of churros remains somewhat murky, stemming from these two theories, the one most widely cited and accepted attributes its creation to the Spanish shepherds. This has led to churros being known worldwide today as a celebrated dessert from Spain.

Churros, pronounced tsurro in Spanish, is a traditional Spanish dish now increasingly well-known by the Indonesian people. One is churros, a dry and crunchy donut cake from Matadors, Spain. Although believed to have originated from Spain, until now, there has been no definite historical source about the origin or history of this churros culinary. The Portuguese sailors were interested in this food and brought it home to their country. The Spanish then learned to make tiao from the Portuguese and then modified the recipe to give rise to the name churros. In addition to being known in Portugal and Spain, the chorus is popular in several countries, with its variations of presentation.

Churros are a popular snack in Spain and Portugal, where people enjoy them as long, golden-brown knots, curls or strips of deep-fried dough, often dipped in chocolate. It’s been suggested that churros came from China via the first Portuguese visitors to its shores in the 1500s. Other scholars believe that youtiao and churros are indeed distant cousins, with one likely common progenitor: the Islamic zulabiya. Spanish chef Jose Antonio Navarro Cortes believes that churros have been influenced by China. The Portuguese likely brought the concept to Spain and through the centuries we mastered the technique to make them. In some parts of Mexico they say they are the creators of them, but I think we mastered a recipe originating in China.

Churros are a world-famous fried dough pastry that is said to have originated in Spain at the end of the Middle Ages. However, their exact origin is somewhat debated. It is widely believed that churro may actually have its origins in China where Portuguese merchants first tasted “youtiao” — “oil-fried stick” — a golden-fried salty delicacy. The Portuguese then recreated this treat back home and added sugar. In neighboring Spain, shepherds would fry strips of dough and coat them in sugar to give them an easily portable snack during their long journeys in the mountains. Churros gained popularity in Spain and became a common street food, often sold by street vendors and at fairs and festivals.

Originating in Spain, churros have become a beloved treat around the world, but their journey to global fame is a tale worth telling. One theory suggests that they were brought to Europe by Portuguese explorers who discovered a similar pastry in China, known as "youtiao." The Spanish adapted the recipe, creating the ridged, star-shaped churros we recognise today by using a star-shaped nozzle to pipe the dough. Another theory posits that churros were invented by Spanish shepherds. Regardless of their precise origins, churros quickly became popular across Spain and were enjoyed at all times of the day, often paired with a cup of thick, rich hot chocolate. From Spain, churros spread to Latin America and the Philippines, brought by Spanish colonisers. We serve fresh, handcrafted churros that stay true to their Spanish roots while offering a modern twist.

A churro is a cinnamon- and sugar-topped fried pastry dough stick with Spanish and Portuguese origins. Churros are similar to doughnuts, but they have ridges because they are piped out of a pastry bag. Because they are fried instead of baked, churros have a fluffy and tender interior with a satisfyingly crispy exterior.
